Between Sanur and Ubud sits a calmer corner of Bali — close to everything, crowded by nothing. A short guide to the area.
Most first-time visitors to Bali end up in Ubud or Canggu — beautiful, but increasingly busy. We chose Ketewel, a calmer village in the Gianyar regency between Sanur and Ubud, precisely because it offers the same access with far less noise.
Where it is
Ketewel sits near Bali's south-east coast, roughly 35 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport and a short drive from both the beaches of Sanur and the culture of Ubud. You're close to everything that makes Bali special without staying in the thick of the crowds.
What's nearby
The famous Tegenungan Waterfall is a short trip away. Ubud's markets, rice terraces and temples are within easy reach for a day out, and Sanur's gentle coastline is close for a quiet swim. Yet evenings in Ketewel itself are calm — birdsong, gardens and the occasional temple ceremony rather than traffic and bars.
Why it suits a retreat
A retreat needs quiet to work. Ketewel lets us hold a week of energy work, sound healing and rest in genuine peace, while keeping Bali's waterfalls, temples and beaches close enough to explore. It's the best of both — connected, but unhurried.
Our retreats are held in a private six-bedroom villa here in Ketewel. If a calmer side of Bali appeals to you, come and see it.
