Warm water, weightlessness and resonant sound. A gentle introduction to one of the most profound experiences on retreat.
A floating sound bath is exactly what it sounds like: you float, supported in warm water, while resonant instruments — singing bowls, gongs and chimes — are played around and beneath you. The water carries sound beautifully, so you don't just hear the tones, you feel them move through your body.
What actually happens
You enter a warm pool and are gently supported so you can float without effort, often with a soft pillow under your head. As the sound begins, the combination of weightlessness and low, sustained frequencies invites your nervous system out of its usual busyness. Many people describe it as the deepest relaxation they have ever felt — somewhere between meditation and sleep.
Why it works
Two things are happening at once. Floating removes almost all physical effort and sensory input, which quiets the body. Sound at certain frequencies encourages slower brainwave states associated with deep rest and meditation. Together they make it remarkably easy to drop into stillness, even for people who find seated meditation difficult.
What to expect afterwards
People come out of a floating sound bath calm, a little dreamy, and often surprisingly emotional in a good way. We always leave space afterwards for quiet, tea and gentle integration rather than rushing to the next thing. It pairs naturally with the reiki and energy work woven through the week.
Do I need any experience?
None at all. You don't need to swim well, meditate, or have done anything like it before — you're supported the whole time. It's one of the experiences guests most often tell us they'll never forget. You can find it on every Rest & Rise – Bali retreat.
